Supporting Pupil Wellbeing

ACHIEVE - LEARN - FLOURISH

The Aspire Learning Federation is made up of two schools - Elm Park Primary School and R J Mitchell Primary School in the London Borough of Havering.

At our school, pupil wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Our inclusive whole-school ethos is built around the principle of ‘Aspire, Believe and Achieve’, ensuring that every child feels safe, valued, listened to and supported to thrive both emotionally and academically.

A positive and inclusive school culture

We promote positive behaviour and relationships through a clear and consistent behaviour and relationships policy, rooted in a restorative approach. This helps children learn how to manage emotions, repair relationships and take responsibility for their actions in a supportive way. Our whole-school reward systems, including the Jar of Good Choices and reward points, celebrate positive behaviour, effort and kindness.

Teaching emotional wellbeing and resilience

Children’s emotional wellbeing is supported through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which teaches emotional literacy, relationships, mental health and personal development. Whole-school and celebration assemblies regularly explore SEMH themes, helping pupils understand feelings, resilience and self-belief. We also teach calming and mindfulness strategies, giving children practical tools to manage worries and emotions.

Across the school, classrooms display strategies to support wellbeing, including Zones of Regulation, emotion cards, and resilience and growth mindset prompts such as “3 before me”. These visual supports help children recognise emotions and develop independence in regulating their feelings.

Safe routines and supportive environments

We use structured class routines and visual daily timetables to help children feel secure and confident about their day. Where needed, pupils are supported with personalised workstations, equipment and adaptations to meet individual needs and support inclusion.

Children also benefit from:

  • Bubble time boxes, offering opportunities for one-to-one support with their class teacher

  • Daily check-in sessions, including positive affirmations after lunch

  • Music and creative opportunities to support emotional expression and wellbeing.

Listening to pupil voice

We place a strong emphasis on pupil voice, ensuring children know their views matter. Opportunities include:

  • Pupil Voice Conferences (termly)

  • Class Learning Forum meetings with SLT

  • Votes for Schools and circle time discussions

  • Informal class circle sessions to address emerging issues

Our buddy system and peer mentors further support children’s confidence, relationships and sense of belonging.

Working in partnership with families

We operate an open-door approach, ensuring parents and children know they are listened to and supported. We believe strong relationships between school and home are key to children’s wellbeing and success.

By combining consistent routines, emotional education, strong relationships and meaningful pupil voice, we aim to support every child’s wellbeing and help them develop the confidence, resilience and skills they need for life beyond primary school.
