Family Liaison Support

ACHIEVE - LEARN - FLOURISH
The Aspire Learning Federation is made up of two schools - Elm Park Primary School and R J Mitchell Primary School in the London Borough of Havering.

My name is Mrs Garrard and I have worked at R J Mitchell for 5 years, firstly as a learning support assistant, ELSA and more recently Family Liaison & Safeguarding Officer. I pride myself in being warm and approachable to both pupils and parents/carers and can always provide a listening ear and a cup of tea if needed! I am a mum of 2 and enjoy running and going to the theatre when I'm not at school!
What is a Family Liaison & Safeguarding Officer:
A Family Liaison & Safeguarding Officer (FLSO) is here to support children, parents, and carers by
building strong, positive relationships between home and school. The FLSO works closely
with families to help overcome challenges, improve wellbeing, and ensure every child has
the best possible opportunity to succeed and that parents & carers feel heard.
How We Can Help:
- Support with attendance concerns or persistent absence and how to overcome this
- Emotional difficulties and emotional literacy
- Parenting support
- Communication between home and school
- Practical help accessing services, groups, and resources
- Support during family changes, bereavement, or crisis
What We Do:
- Provide a confidential, non-judgemental listening ear
- Meet with families in school or at home where appropriate
- Offer information about local support services
- Attend meetings to help provide a supportive link for families
- Work alongside teachers and staff to help remove barriers to learning
- Support staff and parents/carers regarding safeguarding concerns
Who Can Use This Service?
- Parents and carers of any pupil can contact the Family Liaison & Safeguarding Officer for advice, support,
- or a friendly chat. Children are also welcomed if they need to talk and know where to find the FLSO in school.
Confidentiality:
Conversations are kept private. However, if a safeguarding concern arises, we are legally
required to share information with the appropriate safeguarding professionals to keep
children safe.
