The School Games Gold Mark Award is a government-led national award scheme that celebrates schools’ dedication to developing competitive sport and promoting physical activity among young people.

The award recognizes a school’s commitment to providing opportunities for competitive sport, encouraging student participation in a wide range of physical activities, and fostering the development of sport both within the school and in the wider community. It highlights the importance of keeping pupils active and engaged while promoting teamwork, leadership, and community involvement.

To achieve the award, schools registered on the Your School Games website apply through their online school dashboard. They must meet specific criteria related to participation levels, the structure and number of competitions and events, workforce development such as the training of sports leaders, and the provision of school and community sports clubs. Attaining the Gold Mark reflects a school’s strong commitment to physical education and its ongoing efforts to enhance the sporting experience for all students.

“Travel for Life Gold” is the highest level of accreditation in Transport for London’s (TfL) programme that supports schools in promoting active, safe, and sustainable travel. The initiative encourages pupils, staff, and families to choose environmentally friendly ways of travelling, such as walking, cycling, and scooting, rather than relying on cars.

To achieve Gold status, schools must demonstrate a significant reduction in car use or show that at least 90% of journeys to and from school are made by sustainable means. They must also complete a series of educational activities, campaigns, and consultations designed to engage the whole school community and promote long-term travel behaviour change. Earning the Travel for Life Gold award highlights a school’s strong commitment to health, safety, and sustainability.
