WELCOME TO OUR YEAR 6 PAGE

ACHIEVE - LEARN - FLOURISH

The Aspire Learning Federation is made up of two schools - Elm Park Primary School and R J Mitchell Primary School in the London Borough of Havering.

WELCOME

Year 6 is an important year for our pupils. It is the transitional year from Primary to Secondary school and their last year with us at R J Mitchell.

We carefully plan each term to cover key subjects: Reading, Writing, Maths and Science, and the wider foundation subjects, ensuring progression and depth across the year. Through hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and a variety of resources, we aim to inspire curiosity and foster a love for learning. Our curriculum is aligned with national standards while being tailored to the interests and needs of our pupils, helping them make strong progress in all areas.

PE Days

Year 6 PE days are Tuesday (PM) and Wednesday (AM).

Children should come to school in their PE Kit on these days.

The PE uniform is as follows:

P.E kit to be worn all day on P.E days

● Plain black shorts

● Plain black trainers ** or plimsolls

● Plain black tracksuit bottoms and jumper (optional school logo can be worn)

● Plain/RJM logo school colour t-shirt

* Please note: no leggings or trousers other than plain tailored trousers are permitted (no embroidery or embellishments).

**When purchasing footwear parents are advised that trainers which are only black in colour and have no coloured logo, stripes etc. are acceptable.

For health and safety reasons, children are not allowed to wear boots, steep heeled shoes, crocs or sandals in school.

Jewellery

For safety reasons children are not allowed to wear jewellery (including studs) or hard hair ornaments in school.

The wearing of body adornment for cultural reasons will be considered on an individual basis.

Pupils will be required to remove any items.

Hair

Long hair should be tied back at all times. This is so that this does not detract from children's learning and is out of the way during PE lessons. Optional small hair accessories in the school colours only.

Under no circumstances are extreme hairstyles permitted. We have high standards of presentation, and this includes hairstyles.

Our Curriculum & Homework

Continuous home learning of basic skills such as reading, spelling, and number work is very important because it helps children build strong foundations for future learning.

We expect children to read at least three times a week at home to improve their fluency, comprehension and confidence. They should complete weekly spelling homework sheets to reinforce their learning in school. They should also practice times tables (links to TTRS can be found below).

This is the overview of learning in Year 6.

Autumn 2 curriculum overview

Homework

Homework will be evolving this year into a more active and creative approach. As a school, we firmly believe in the science of how children learn best, and this new method aims to engage and inspire our pupils.

Alongside this, we want the children to read daily to an adult at home, as this practice significantly enhances their literacy skills. In addition, spelling practice will remain a vital part of our homework routine and spelling homework will be given out weekly, via their spelling books. This will be sent home on Friday's and is due back the following Thursday.

We will also be making use of Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) or Numbots because we know that a strong grasp of times tables is the foundation upon which all maths learning is built. We want all children to be engaging with this at home daily.
