ACHIEVE - LEARN - FLOURISH

The Aspire Learning Federation is made up of two schools - Elm Park Primary School and R J Mitchell Primary School in the London Borough of Havering

WELCOME

This year marks an important step in their learning journey as they build on the foundations of the Early Years and grow into more independent and confident learners. Our curriculum will focus on strengthening core skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, understanding the world, while also encouraging curiosity and creativity through science, history, geography, art, music, and physical education.

Alongside academic progress, we place great importance on developing social and emotional skills, helping children to form positive friendships, build resilience, and develop a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their school life.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to ensure your child feels happy, supported, and motivated to achieve their very best.

Jewellery

For safety reasons children are not allowed to wear jewellery or hard hair ornaments in school.

The wearing of body adornment for cultural reasons will be considered on an individual basis.

Pupils will be required to remove any items.

If your child had their ears pierced you can purchase silicone studs such as these.

Hair

Long hair should be tied back at all times. This is so that this does not detract from children's

learning and is out of the way during PE lessons. Optional small hair accessories in the school

colours only.

Under no circumstances are extreme hairstyles permitted. We have high standards of

presentation, and this includes hairstyles.

PE Days

Physical development is one of the prime areas of learning and development within the Early Years Foundation Stage. We focus particularly on children’s gross and fine motor skills by embedding coordination, control, movement as well as how children understand the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices in relation to food that they eat.

P.E. lessons will begin in Spring 1 term in the new year. P.E. lessons consist of structured teaching in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. To ensure full access and high performance in PE, your children need to come to school wearing their PE kits on PE days. These specific days will be available towards the end of December.

As part of the Physical activity sessions children need to wear:

  • Plain shorts / leggings / tracksuit bottoms (black)

  • RJM burgundy PE top/ plain burgundy t-shirt. Black PE RJM logoed jumper/ plain black jumper/ zip up.

  • Plain black trainers.

Our Curriculum & Homework

The EYFS curriculum is based on Understanding the World, this includes past and present, communication, families, our bodies, changing of seasons, emotions and regulations. Along with learning phonics using Read Write Ink to identify sounds and letter formation, basic Maths skills including: sorting, comparing sizes and masses, measuring and identifying and making patterns.

Homework within the Early Years curriculum is not a statutory requirement. However, well-planned and age-appropriate activities at home can play a valuable role in reinforcing learning, encouraging parental involvement and developing positive learning habits. Our continuous home learning of basic skills link to everyday life that promotes interaction, play-based opportunities that support key areas of the EYFS framework. Out of the six activities that have been provided we would like families to choose three of them that your child will enjoy and will offer opportunities for further independence. Children writing their own name is an important and exciting milestone for children in the Early Years. It supports fine motor skills, letter recognition and a sense of identity and independence. We politely ask for parents to continue to practice name writing at home to further support their writing skills. We kindly ask for children to read at least three times a week at home to improve their fluency, comprehension and confidence.
