School Uniform

30 June 2025 (by Ashlea Stevenson (ashlea))

Dear Parents and Carers,

School Uniform Policy

The school has a clear vision statement ‘Aspire, Believe & Achieve’ and a set of core values based on ‘SOAR’ - Supportive, Outstanding, Aspirational, Resilient, which we are endeavouring to fulfil in every way, every day. This involves setting high expectations in all aspects of school life for all involved at R J Mitchell Primary, particularly if we are ‘outstanding’ in all we do.

To this end, we have a clear school uniform policy so that parents and pupils know what the expectations are and to ensure that as a member of our school community, they show these high expectations through the smart way they are dressed in their uniform.  I hope parents and carers understand therefore that the uniform policy is there to try to ensure that our pupils look smart, when attending school and that when out in public, whether it be walking to and from school, or attending official events on behalf of the school, they reflect the school’s vision and values relating to ‘SOAR - Supportive, Outstanding, Aspirational, Resilient.

Unfortunately, there has been a deterioration in the wearing of the correct school uniform. Pupils are not always wearing the required school uniform or PE kit and feedback from parents at a previous Parents Forum meeting also noted concerns that pupils did not look smart enough in their school PE kit when coming into school, with clothing and trainers, other than the required colours, being worn.

In response, therefore, I am sending out this letter with a copy of the correct school uniform required. A copy of the more detailed school uniform policy is also provided via the link below, so that parents can make sure that when buying new uniform and footwear for the start of the new school year in September, as I know many of you will be doing, that they have bought the correct school uniform and footwear.

I am also taking this opportunity to address the wearing of jewellery, in particular, earrings and hair ornaments. We have had a couple of incidents, where pupils have been wearing large, oversized bows in their hair, which another child has caught, whilst playing in the playground, and they have been ripped out of their hair. This is also why we ask that pupils do not wear earrings to school, as there have been similar incidents over the years. We ask that pupils do not wear earrings of any kind to school. This avoids the potential for any accidents, as children cannot wear earrings during PE lessons anyway.

Parents can provide their children with the small plastic earring retainers, if they are concerned about their child’s piercings closing up.

Again, I hope parents understand that these rules are in place for good reason. I have asked for small sized maroon or grey bows; small for health and safety reasons, specific coloured bows, so as to be smart and in keeping with our uniform colours.

All staff will be focusing on pupils wearing the agreed school uniform and PE kit starting from September 2025 and if pupils are not wearing the correct uniform, parents will be contacted and asked to remedy this immediately. Staff will be vigilant at the school gate, when pupils are coming in, in the morning and teachers will also be focusing heavily on ensuring the correct uniform is being worn for all pupils when in class and at PE lessons.

Please see a list of all school uniform items attached. Please note that footwear, whether shoes or trainers should be all black, trainers must not have white stripes, soles or laces or any other colour, but must be plain black all over.

Finally I would like to thank all of our parents who have supported the school in all kinds of ways this year and I hope this will continue with parents understanding and adhering to the school uniform policy and supporting our journey to be ‘outstanding’ in every possible way.

Kind regards,

Ms V. Morris
